Pelvic Pain

Most women experience some pelvic pain during their lifetime. But when it occurs frequently, affects the quality of day to day life and causes women to miss work or avoid social events due to the severity then investigation and treatment is warranted. Some women are unable to enjoy a normal sexual relationship due to pain getting in the way.

There are many causes of pelvic pain including endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids and occasionally  inflammation of the womb (‘adenomyosis’).

The investigations of pain include a pelvic examination, ultrasound of the pelvis and often a daycase operation (laparoscopy) to look inside the pelvis and establish the cause of the pain. One of the commonest causes of pain is endometriosis and this is often very treatable with drugs or more effectively by laparoscopic excision of endometriosis. This day surgery removes the endometriosis and improves pain for about two thirds of women. It is even more effective at resolving pain experienced during sex.
